#20 Painting Rooms

Topic: Activity

Learning Outcome 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

This weekend I volunteered at the Institute of Chinese Culture (ICC) to assist in the restoration process before reopening for the fall semester for the first time since the pandemic. I found this opportunity through a close friend who attends the Chinese language program offered by the ICC and we went together along with my sister. Our main task was to paint the walls of each classroom. They had been repainting since November but had just finished the first floor this month. There was a demand for volunteers since they are in a hurry to reopen the school by September.

I had no prior experience with painting walls but it was a task that was simple enough. It was just time consuming since we had so many rooms left to paint. On the first day, we finished two rooms with six people working for 5 hours. I woke up the next day with sore arms from using the rollers which is why I consider this activity decent exercise.

#15 Volunteering at the Art Market

Volunteering at the Art Market  Topic: Service  Learning Outcome 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance  To be honest, the main reason that I wanted to volunteer  was pretty selfish. I wanted to be at school around people from school after doing online learning for almost a year. Even though I wouldn't be exposed to everything at once, I was really looking forward to seeing at least one of my classmates again and walking on campus. I came to realize that what I wanted was exactly what the purpose of this event was fulfilling, bringing the Post Oak community together after distancing for so long. The Art Market was sort of a revamp of the art gala that took place every other year. Every class came up with an art collection that would be bought by a parent through a bid, this year it was through a raffle system.  The volunteering was really simple and really only a one person job. I only signed up for one shift, from 12 to 2pm, since it was t...

#21 Ice Skating

Topic: Activity  Learning Outcome 1: Identify areas of strength and develop areas for growth  This Saturday I went ice skating for the first time in years. It was a leisure activity that I used to do with my friends until we lost interest. Today, for old time's sake, we went back to the Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center to test our muscle memory.  At first, we all wobbled onto the ice holding our bodies in awkward positions to prevent ourselves from falling. After a few minutes, I had warmed up and keeping my balance was not much of a problem. I was still very cautious and kept my back slightly bent so that I wouldn't slip and fall backwards. I tired out before my friends since we had skated for two hours already. It was decent exercise and I was pretty sore the next day.  I'm proud to say that I only fell once even though it was still painful. As I felt my body close in on the ground I twisted to my side so that my left thigh felt most of the impact. That left a so...

#10 CWC: A Picture is Worth a 1000 Words

Creative Writing Club #5  Topic: Service  Learning Outcome 5: Working Collaboratively My co-president and I have been planning a longer activity together but in the more recent weeks we have been receiving a lower turnout so we had been putting it off for a few weeks. We planned on doing a short story writing mini-course called "A Picture is Worth a 1000 Words." It would span three meetings, the first week would be for practice, the second week would be our writing portion and our third week would be for feedback.  For our practice class, we practiced prompt writing through pictures and giving feedback. We usually have about 15-20 minutes of prompt writing class so the result is usually a piece about two paragraphs long for most of us.  For our writing portion, we had a planned to do a lesson on character building, plot, and worldbuilding for short stories then giving some time to write. But we decided to just keep the same set of pictures as more practice and ...
