#13 Digital Art Time: Did I Trace?

Digital Art Time #3  Topic: Creativity  Learning Outcome 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions  When I was in first grade, I took painting classes with my mom. By classes, I mean we copied the instructors paintings while he walked around the studio and critiqued everyone. Since I saw only six, I didn't really paint too much, but my mom claimed that it was actually really helpful to "copy" the instructor's style since it helped her learn techniques more quickly than if she had to figure out how to do it on her own. Even if she didn't like the style or composition, she could still use specific skills she learned to benefit her. Copying someone's art doesn't automatically make your art uncreative.  So I wanted to try copying something but on a simpler scale. I was aiming to do a small study on form. I practiced anatomy by focusing on shading and proportions to build form. So I basically made fanart of Elsa. It started out, like most of m...

#12 Digital Art Time: Purple Hair

Digital Art Time #2  Topic: Creativity  Learning Outcome 1: Identify areas of strength and develop areas for growth  This time, I wanted to try drawing something that incorporated more body parts, a pose, and line art. I had already come up with a pose and went from there. Line art was sort of a new challenge because most of my pencil based drawings have incorporate a lot of shading and blending for more realistic forms so hard lines are usually something I stayed away from. But with the tools I was comfortable using on sketchbook, I thought it would be better to start out with something simple and cartoony. I did start working on multiple layers for the first time now that I started introducing different elements beyond just sketches. Having to flip through layers was something new but it wasn't too hard to adapt to.  I spent about two or three weeks on this, so most of December. I went back and forth between several ideas and I didn't really have a definite end goa...

#11 Digital Art Time: Which Texture Am I Supposed to Use?

Digital Art Time #1 Topic: Creativity  Learning Outcome 1: Identify areas of strength and develop areas for growth  Around December I started experimenting with Autodesk Sketchbook. I didn't want to start too many things all at once, so I tried sketching a few things in the same file. I ended up with a colored sketch of a hand. I only used my own hand as a reference with just the normal lighting in my room. I began with a pencil sketch to get the proportions right. I didn't really know my way around the brush/pen/texture menu so I tried out a few and chose one to block out the different colors. Then I picked a pen texture to try out for more defined shapes.  This was over the course of two days. It isn't much for such a small, incomplete sketch, especially since the initial sketch wasn’t very thorough, but it took a while to get used to the new tools. Since I only really drew with pencil, paper, and occasionally colored pencils, I didn't really have much of a range with...
