Learning Outcome 1: Identify areas of strength and develop areas for growth
After running several successful meetings with lessons including prompt writing, Kurt Vonnegut's shapes of stories, and a fun activity on character writing from interactive online stories, we were approached by our club advisor, Ms. Harrison. She informed us that the high school staff and community council had been discussing a plan to formalize clubs. That would mean having a teacher chaperone at all meetings, deciding whether we'll be meeting consistently or have one off meetings, being drop-in or members only, along with other things. We will have to make this decision by Friday this week.
When Ms. Harrison had her first drop-in with us last week, we were not exactly having our most formal meeting. We were just running through one of the interactive story games that we had already done the week before, so everyone who had done the activity the week before didn't come and it was just some of our close friends. My co-leader and I were nervous about this since one of the things Ms. Harrison mentioned was that she didn't want clubs to become sort of like cliques... We were also kind of disappointed that Ms. Harrison had missed our more productive meetings, but we had more time to prove to her that we could be good leaders.
Yesterday, we managed to gather more attendees even though we forgot to notify them with out previously consistent update emails. I was secretly relieved with our turnout since we had attendees from different grade levels which I hoped would present a more inclusive environment especially since I really wanted to show to Ms. Harrison that she didn't need to get too involved in our formalization process. I realized that although we have been able to make plans and conduct meetings successfully, we may need to work on consistency since we weren't really prepared for Ms. Harrison's drop-ins during our more informal sessions.
