Volunteering at the Art Market
Topic: Service
Learning Outcome 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
To be honest, the main reason that I wanted to volunteer
was pretty selfish. I wanted to be at school around people from school after doing online learning for almost a year. Even though I wouldn't be exposed to everything at once, I was really looking forward to seeing at least one of my classmates again and walking on campus. I came to realize that what I wanted was exactly what the purpose of this event was fulfilling, bringing the Post Oak community together after distancing for so long. The Art Market was sort of a revamp of the art gala that took place every other year. Every class came up with an art collection that would be bought by a parent through a bid, this year it was through a raffle system.
The volunteering was really simple and really only a one person job. I only signed up for one shift, from 12 to 2pm, since it was the only slot left since most people volunteering were trying to get hours in for other community organizations they were part of. It was lunch time, so there weren't many people coming in so I was mostly just standing in for the other volunteers who were taking lunch breaks. It was really simple, we just handed out pamphlets and gave information on the raffle process and ticket purchases. Even though the task was basic, it was nice to finally feel like I was part of the community again and reconnecting with others who are so enthusiastic and involved.
